We all know that Google & Facebook are scary, one day you search for a new bicycle, then all of a sudden you are bombarded by relentless adverts from online bicycle retailers.

I know exactly how bad this can be). This process of 'search' and then to be 'bombarded' by adverts has all of a sudden opened several doors for me.

, I wanted to research the facts on climate change, environmental impact, zero waste etc. So I got online and found out what the state of play was for our planet.

Over the last few weeks of searching online for environmental facts, I have noticed a change in my digital landscape. I am now being 'bombarded' by adverts and information from environmentally friendly products, organisations and groups.

This week I want to continue in this vein. It's another big one, lobbying governments. But what is the most effective way to do this? I have a daytime job, two young kids and a hectic life, I need to be strategic about how I approach this. How can I maximise my impact for lobbying governments?

           The simple answer, online petitions.

'There’s a reason that petitions have been around for thousands of years – they’re a simple and effective lobbying tactic'

Now I have the vehicle for lobbying, I next wanted to set up a process in which I could maximise my impact. I don't really have time to go hunting for all the environmental petitions out there. Working as a web designer we love processes and systems so after some tinkering here's what I came up with. It's super easy, won't take too much time and I'd love you to implement it too so we can make a difference to our planet!

          Step one, clear the way!

Once set up my process will take around 10 minutes of your time each week. I don't want to add to anyone's workload so step one is to gain back some extra time.

Let's clear the way. First unsubscribe from every single email newsletter you get that is of little relevance to you, you need to clear your communication channel of anything that could be time wasting.

Next, and here's the big one, unsubscribe from every single email newsletter you get that tries to persuade you to buy anything, even from brands you like (except maybe green companies).

You really don't need more stuff. The aim is to free up some time to do good with your inbox and internet use, and in turn stop adding to consumerism.

Step two bring in the good stuff & support environmental groups

Now you have cleared your inbox of unnecessary information and hopefully freed up some time, it's time to fill it up with important information about environmental issues that need our support.

You could go ahead and sign up to newsletters from as many environmental charities and groups as possible, but you may well suffer from information overload. The aim is to be strategic.

My suggestion. Go with the big boys.

Choose and sign up for a hand full of the big environmental petitions (ones with a lot of supporters)

Now here's the trick, change your account settings to ensure you only receive emails about other climate change petitions.

Click the top right account link (a little image of a person or you, if you've uploaded an image)

             Go to settings

             Then 'see privacy settings'

It is up to you how often you want to receive communications from change.org personal I don't want to be 'bombarded'. My trick is to just choose 'There are opportunities to join campaigns that I might find interesting'. As you previously signed up to some climate based petitions this will mean you will receive emails whenever a new climate petition is created.

Now just sit back, whenever a new petition is emailed to you, sign it

The great thing about change.org is when you go in and sign a petition you will then be served up similar petitions which you can quickly 'one touch' sign. It is very much a swipe right type of process, within about 3 minutes I had signed up to 8 other petitions.

Finally, when presented the opportunity, share these petitions via social media.

Greenpeace / WWF / Rainforest Alliance / Friends of the Earth

Change.org will ensure we cover a lot in a matter of minutes, next we want to sign up and receive information from larger environmental groups. I am not discrediting smaller charities, a lot of these I can support through change.org. However larger charities will have more collective 'people power'. I started with Greenpeace, WWF, Rainforest Alliance and Friends of the Earth, and will be doing more as time goes on. So...

             Go to each website

             Sign up to their newsletters

When they email you about a petition, obviously sign it!

Now you have a great system in place for lobbying governments about climate change and environmental issues from the comfort of your home / office in little time at all. At this point it's up to you, simply use this process for any charity that is close to your heart. I would suggest searching for ones that you strongly believe in. It might be zero waste, deforestation or temperature rise. Chose the top charities in that field and sign up to their newsletters.

          Happy lobbying to you all!

Things need to change, quickly, if we are to save our planet.

          A few months ago I remember watching an expert on Facebook (I wish I could remember who it was) talking about the three most important things we can do to reverse a potential climate catastrophe, they were;

To become a vegetarian overnight won't be easy, and if I'm completely honest with my self I am not sure I want to. So I have decided to break this one down into smaller 'bite sized' chunks (quality pun!), which i can revisit over the coming weeks.

number one food with the biggest environmental impact is lamb. Now that's great news in our household, we rarely eat lamb (although from now on we have chosen to forgo it completely). And number 2 according to Business Insider is... Beef.

Ok so beef, now there's more of a challenge, and there we go, change number 5 is on... stop eating beef! I think as my story progresses I will be removing other meats from my diet but I feel I need to go one step at a time.

Beef burgers will definitely be hard, I am a sucker for a decent juicy burger, however I really want to make this switch last so am going to spend more than one week on this change. For the next few weeks, along with regular weekly changes, I'm going to try cooking as many vegetarian beef burger recipes / substitute beef burgers I can find. So I'm running late one day this week, I can't find my laptop charger, my gloves have gone walkabout (tiss getting cold), and the kids are being a pain.

I get in my car and... S**t the windscreen is frozen over! But it's ok, I need to give the kids a hug and fill my water bottle so I leave the car running and the heaters blowing to melt the ice. A few minutes later and I'm on my way :)

Then I drive down the street and through town and see about 10 cars doing the same, just sitting there, running their engines and I think... seriously? (a quick note to anyone in my street / town, this is in no way a dig at you, you guys rock and I love living there)

So I did some calculations (at the end of this blog post for those analytical types) and during the winter months the 10 cars I saw idling would churn out about 975 pounds of CO2, just to de-ice windscreens, which is just shy of half a ton!!!

Well I wasn't going to go and buy some de-icer, I don't need to spend time researching as I'm sure those white spray cans can't be good, if anything it's just more waste when empty. And so I have reverted back to using a good old fashion ice scraper*. Yes it might take me a few chilly minutes in the morning but that's life, trying to make a difference ain't always a bed of roses!

If 10 people in my town ran their engines in the morning for 5 minutes that's:

            10 people x 2.5 pounds = 15 pounds per day

There are around 65 working days over winter (grim I know). 3 months long that's 13 weeks

           so:

15 pounds per day x 65 working days in winter = 975 pounds which is just shy of half a ton! And that's just my town!!!

I love a shower, I really do. But one morning this week I felt at odds in my place of sanctuary.

I started my normal routine; kids wake me up far too early, I fend off the first 'argument of the morning', I wander like a zombie into the shower and after a few minutes I'm starting to feel human again.

But this particular morning is different, I glance down at the plug hole and am struck. Like a Waterworld bad dream I can't help but think; there's a lot of water down there, a bit too much. And

           bam it hits me...

Thing number 3 this week will be can I save water while showering.

My first task was to find out how much water I actually use, and then how much water I can save by making changes to my daily shower.

On a normal morning I shower for about 8 minutes, let's average out the Home Water Works estimate and say I use 65 liters of water a day (sorry America but I'm sticking with the metric system). After some speedier showering I got this down to 6 minutes. I was super happy with that but thought... 'next'.

We gave this a try and found that actually our shower head was pretty good, we also found that by simply 'turning down' our shower pressure (we are lucky to have a wall mixer shower where we can adjust the flow rate) the water usage was also reduced. We therefore decided that reducing our shower time and turning down our flow rate was ok this time.

Finally a great tip while you wait for your shower to warm up. Don't waste all that lovely water, stick a bucket under the shower, save the water and use it to flush the toilet or water the plants. Every little helps!

A big box arrives (free delivery over £20) on your door step. (We loved the fact you could choose for the parcel to be left in a safe place or with a neighbour, as we are often out). The kids get to rip open the box and use it for a new toy (a great piece of re-using). They also loved staking the rolls up and we played a quick game of skittles while we talked about how many trees we were saving. I have never had so much fun with toilet paper :)

So, and this is what it comes down to, is the toilet paper actually comfortable to use? Or does every wipe fill me with dread? The verdict... It's a 10 out of 10 :) I can honestly say I wouldn't have noticed the difference and as a family we are all completely happy with Who Gives A Crap toilet rolls.

They were the reason I was doing this, they were the reason I was, for the first time in my life, genuinely scared of the future. So ‘thing’ number one became obvious:

Sir David's modus operandi was laid out in one statement. By showing the beauty and wonder of our natural world we will come to love it and, in turn, want to protect its fragility.

This is now our family's guiding principle. If we can get our kids to love nature then we hope, in turn, they will want to protect it. Although we have always been outdoor types we have now ramped this up and use 'getting outdoors' as the basis for all family free time.

You don't need to go on 5 mile hikes every weekend (very hard with a 4-year-old I can tell you), there is so much that can be found on a macro level, bees collecting pollen (honey for us), trees growing (carbon dioxide) or even just ants doing their thing (I’m sure someone will tell me how ants help our ecology but I’ve yet to find out.)
